If you live in Kansas City, today it felt like we were the center of the universe! The Kansas City Royals won the 2015 World Series (congrats BOYS IN BLUE!) and today was the celebration parade. Literally, there were people EVERYWHERE; the entire city celebrated: schools were out, courts shortened their sessions, the public buses were free...it was a good day to call ourselves Kansas Citians.
The Royals won on Sunday and from the minute the game was called in the middle of the night, fans all over the city were rushing to buy Royals gear: t-shirts, hoodies, sweats, hats, pennants, flags, beads, socks...everything! BUT WHY? Today, all the streets were covered in BLUE. BUT WHY? What's the point of having a royals hat, or hoodie or tee? There were people calling to order our Royals inspired merch to wear to the parade. BUT WHY? There's a good reason; it has to do with the unity and togetherness shown among the city today. I think things like tees and hoodies aid in doing so. It allows us to show some commonality. Without words, we can visibly show that there is shared intent, goal, or belief among ourselves. Simultaneously, t-shirts, hats and hoodies offer a token of memorabilia to our special moments. Reminders that, "we were there when..." or "that time we did...." Today, I heard a man telling a story about a Royals jacket that he had as a boy in 1985 when the Royals last won the World Series. His son wore it today at the 2015 Royals World Series Parade. WOW! Today, wearing our blue, we were apart of something. We were apart of baseball history and showing the world that this little mid-western city is unified and bigger in spirit than anyone ever thought. Yeah, its more than just a t-shirt.
